Ali and I had been talking about getting engaged for a number of months. Sometimes the talks were more make-believe where I could buy her the biggest and most beautiful diamond ring in the world and other times our talks were more realistic. Regardless, I always said that I "needed to get my finances in order" before we got engaged.

There was some truth to that, but it was mostly just a way to keep Ali guessing. Over the summer we went to jewelers to try rings on and I actually researched diamonds online so I knew what I was doing. My plan was to propose to Ali in New Hampshire during my family's annual vacation, I had already picked it out and bought it, but... it did not get to me in time.

Unfortunately I did not have a backup plan. I figured the proposal would happen spontaneously when the perfect time presented itself. After work on Wednesday August 14 I called Mr. Gerbino to ask for his blessing. I said that my plan was to ask for Ali's hand in marriage sometime within the week. Little did I know I would be proposing 2 hours after the phone call. While we sat and ate our sushi together, I thought about proposing but wanted something a little more special and meaningful...a better story to tell the kids. But when she got upset, because "everyone else is getting engaged", I knew that it was the perfect time to tell her I wanted to spend my life with her. And it turns out, it could not have been any more perfect.
